From the recording Step of Faith
I wrote Daddy's Song years ago to express to my dad how I felt about his addiction and how much I wanted him to recover. I think most people who have loved someone who struggled with addiction can understand how hard it is to watch someone who is unhappy and searching for answers as they seem to take one step towards recovery only to fall back into addiction. At the time, I felt personally responsible for saving him; and it was a heavy burden. I added the ending after Daddy died. He never got sober but did seek God's help with a close friend shortly before his sudden death.
Lyrics
Watching a cold winter sun sink down
Behind the old dead tree,
I wonder how I should pray for you
And what the answer will be.
The truth is pulling softly at your heart,
But you just slam the door.
It breaks my heart to feel the hope
Just to have it die once more.
Do you really wanna know the truth?
You've heard it so much before,
But you just close your eyes
And walk away once more.
I've answered all of your questions,
But you just don't like what you hear;
You ask the same questions again and again;
You remain a prisoner to fear.
My heart is heavily burdened
For you to be free from these chains;
I cry out to God with anger and tears,
But still the burden remains.
But do you really wanna know the truth...
I wonder if I've done everything right.
I've tried not to hold back.
I know I can't trust myself for your life,
But faith in God I lack.
I keep hoping you'll hear the truth,
That your heart will be pierced with love,
That your eyes will be opened once and for all
to the gift of life from above.
Oh, I keep hoping you will hear the truth
As I tell it to you once more.
Please don't close your eyes this time;
You're standing at the door.
'Cause our time is running out;
There may not be much more.
Please don't walk away again;
You're standing at the door.
Well...you finally heard the truth
And you asked him into your life.
All your problems are over now;
You have eternal life.
You finally heard the truth,
And I praise God above.
I can't wait to see you there
Surrounded by his love.
Yes, I can't wait to see you there,
Surrounded by his love.
