I wrote this song when I felt invisible and unheard after several discouraging events and conversations. I read a Psalm that helped me realize that I could feel sadness and anger about the words or actions of others without getting stuck there or letting those things define me. It also helped me separate the painful words and actions of other people and the shame they caused from the way I believed God saw me.

Lyrics

Here I come with my tear-moistened eyes,
Will you listen to me? Will you listen to me?
Cause I feel so worthless, so helpless.
Like a voice in a vacuum, I scream.

"Those aren't the eyes I see you through;
You're a princess dressed in gold; you're a warrior so bold,"
He says to my heart through the shattering.
"I laid down my life to make you clean and white."

Here I come with my broken heart,
Will you listen to me? Will you listen to me?
The words that were spoken: they tore my soul;
But you told me instead:

"Those aren't the eyes I see you through:
You're a princess dressed in gold; you're a warrior so bold,"
He says to my heart through the shattering.
"I laid down my life to make you clean and white."

Here I come with my darkness.
Will you listen to me? Will you listen to me?
It's sticky like tar, and I'm so helpless;
And I need a savior.

"These are the eyes I see you through:
You're a princess dressed in gold; you're a warrior so bold,"
He says to my heart through the shattering.
"I laid down my life. I took your darkness on me."

"Those aren't the eyes I see you through..."
